Saint Jerome Church History

Our parish is blessed in so many ways. We have a rich history filled with reaching major milestones. We have witnessed the transformation of challenges into opportunities, progress into greatness, and dreams into reality. Some of our past milestones include:

  • The founding of the Saint Jerome Parish, in 1949,
  • The completion of the Church building, in 1950,
  • The commencement of Saint Jerome Parish School, in 1952,
  • The construction of the new Church, in 1966,

During the first couple of years the first Masses for the Saint Jerome Parish were celebrated with about 300 families in the La Tijera Theater. This arrangement only fueled the fire to start and complete the original church building. The ground breaking for the construction of the new church building took place on December 27,1949. Not even the busy Christmas season could get in the way of beginning construction for their new parish home.

With unprecedented growth in the parish Monsignor Thomas McNicholas, the first appointed pastor in 1949, saw the need for a school. Saint Jerome School began in 1952 under the direction of Monsignor McNicholas and Sister Wilma Therese of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Over the next nine years, along with the growth of the parish, the school would grow to more than 720 students filling three buildings that housed sixteen classrooms, two for each grade.

By the early 1960's, Monsignor McNicholas could see that the Saint Jerome Parish Community was quickly outgrowing the twelve year old church building. With great insight and vision, Monsignor McNicholas, with the help of Raymond Whalley, a Saint Jerome parishioner and local architect, began designing the plans for a larger church building that would sit just to the East of the original church. Construction commenced in October of 1965 and was completed in 1966. This building has now been the home for Saint Jerome parishioners over the last four decades.
